07.45 - Kasim Sulton receives a mention on the News page of MeatLoafOnline about his forthcoming appearance at Toys In The Park on Sunday 18th December.

Kasim Sulton

(The $10 figure is for the bike ride. Fans attending Kasim's gig are just asked for "a" donation, plus an unwrapped toy.) Also, contary to what has been posted elsewhere, Kasim is not bringing his own band to this event. He is playing a solo set and then may be playing with some of the other bands on the bill.
There is also a link MeatLoafOnline to Kasim's online journal about his photos of the recording of background vocals for Bat Out Of Hell 3.

Movin' Out

Last night Kasim played his 85th and final performance of Movin' Out on Broadway. Kasim played guitar in 79 of these performances and bass 6 times. Kasim is the only musician in the history of the musical to occupy 2 "chairs". Kasim also sings background vocals. The musical is still playing to large audiences but according to reports on the Internet it is closing due to the theater being sold.

Kasim Sulton started playing in this band through Tommy Brynes who he replaces playing guitar and singing background vocals. Tommy Brynes has been Billy Joel’s musical director and guitar player for 13 years and he was responsible for auditioning and putting together the band for the Movin’ Out musical. Tommy also used to play with Joan Jett.

What is Movin’ Out?
Movin’ Out is a musical that was conceived by the award winning choreographer Twyla Tharp and is based on songs by Billy Joel. Billy Joel described the collaboration as "People have sent me cornball scripts about "Piano Man" or "Uptown Girl". But Twyla was a natural".

Twyla Tharp described it as "I always felt Billy Joel could do a Broadway show, and a Broadway show was something that always interested me". Twyla continues "It’s a collaboration with Billy’s music. That’s very different than a collaboration with him. I chose Joel because there is rage in his music and guts in his songs, and I believe in him as a storyteller."

The musical is set on Long Island in the 1960s and tells the story of 5 friends living through the tumultuous years of 1967 to 1987. It features over 20 dancers and the band perform 30 Billy Joel songs.

Movin’ Out was nominated for 10 Tony Awards and won the 2003 Tony Awards for both Best Orchestration and Best Choreography. Richard Zoglin of Time magazine described the musical as "Movin’ Out seems to want to burst out of the theater, setting a new standard for the rock musical. Twyla Tharp and Billy Joel make Broadway rock!"

"30 Billy Joel classics. The kinetic imagination of Twyla Tharp.
A vibrant company of over 20 dancers and 10 musicians.
You’ve never seen anything like Movin’ Out."

The Stage set-up
The band are positioned throughout the whole show on a moveable “ledge” which rises above the dancers and at times moves across the stage so that it is nearer the audience. When Kasim plays in the band he is quote prominently positioned (as the musical director Tommy needs to be). Looking at the band from the stage on the far left is the keyboardist, drummer and bassist. On the far right are the three percussionists with the lead guitarist in front of them. In the middle of the stage is the lead vocalist / pianist and, at the end of his piano, is where Kasim stands. Kasim sings in all but about three of the songs and is clearly visible for the whole set other than two songs when he is not lit up. One word of warning though - if you sit in the seats at the very far back of the mezzine section of the theater you probably will not be able to see his head!

Review of Kasim in Movin’ Out
I went to see Kasim in Movin’ Out in his performance on Monday 27th December. This was his third out of six performances this week and I thought he put on a great show! The main lead vocalist / pianist Michael Cavanaugh didn’t play this performance but instead Wade Preston took over that role and he was really excellent - I even thought he played sang some of the Billy Joel songs better than when I saw Billy Joel in concert!

My one over-riding memory of this musical though will be the fact that it seemed strange to me that the people on stage don't sing! I expected a musical to include the actors / dancers to sing but it was mainly the guy on the piano singing (with some very distinct background vocals from Kasim, amongst others!). The person behind me said that it was the best musical she'd ever seen as she left the theatre but it appeared to me to be a band playing Billy Joel songs with some dancing below!

I also found the story very difficult to follow. I’ll freely admit that a lot of my time I wasn’t really watching the dancing but even when I did, other than the part when one guy died in battle, I still couldn’t always work out what was going on despite having read the synopsis of the musical! The dancing itself was excellent - even all the dancers in the chorus had distinct roles to play and each had their own time in the spotlight. There was also a lot of the twirling girls around in the air and throwing them around type which is very dramatic! However I very much doubt that anyone who hadn’t read the synopsis would know what was happening on stage by the dancing alone.

Before I saw the show I wondered (worried!) about how much or how little Kasim’s personality would be allowed to shine on stage. From seeing Kasim having to stand in a box at the Todd Rundgren Liars gigs, I wasn’t looking forward to seeing another show where he was greatly restricted but I’m sure that he took this role knowing this and it was obviously still Kasim on stage. He may only be able to make limited or little eye contact with the audience but there’s still no mistaking his mannerisms on stage! At the end of this performance, when the band are lowered again onto the stage, a couple of the dancers shook hands with Kasim and his personality came across then.

I’m really glad that I was lucky enough that Kasim was playing performances in a week when I already had plans to visit America so that I was able to see him in Movin’ Out and this means that he can now add a Broadway show credit to his resume which surely must now cover the whole spectrum of the music business from solo work to soft rock to heavy rock to Broadway!

Thursday 8th December 2005 - Kasim Sulton is playing the evening performance of Movin' Out on Broadway tonight
Kasim and The New Cars
17.30 - It doesn't mention Kasim by name but the latest edition of Rolling Stone magazine has the following blurb in it about The New Cars:
"Rundgren Joins The Cars
Todd Rundgren will join original Cars members Elliot Easton and Greg Hawkes as The New Cars, who will tour next year and possibly cut a new album. The Cars, whose hits included "My Best Friend's Girl" and "You Might Think", disbanded in 1988. Original frontman Ric Ocasek has opted out of the reunion. Said Rundgren on his website: "An opportunity has arisen for me to pay my bills, play to a larger audience, work with musicians I know and like, and ideally have some fun for a year."
"
Videos Of The Week
11.00 - As it hasn't been updated for a couple of weeks, 3 videos have been added to The Video Of The Week section on the front page of KasimInfo.com this week.
All 3 videos are of Kasim singing Set Me Free and all were recorded at his great gig at The Point on 19th May 2001 (still one of my favorite solo gigs that he's played).
Unfortunately when Kasim wrote the song he didn't consider that in years to come some people would have digital cameras that only record 15 second segments so the lines of the song don't fit into that too well!

Kasim Sulton at I-Studio

08.45 - Kasim Sulton is advertising his bass playing on I-Studio.net (an Internet based recording system). It is explained on the website as:
"Listen through to the audio clips on this site and decide which player or engineer best suits your needs. Use the email link on that artists page to check availability and send an MP3 if possible. We'll go over your project via email and discuss session details with you. Once we're on the same page, and the session date is arranged, hit the "Book Session" button and pay up. On the date and time of the session, establish a chat connection, and upload your track to our FTP site. Give us the track with and without the instruments you'd like to have overdubbed (a mix with no guitar for example). During the session, we'll send MP3s for review and discussion (via live chat). When the session is complete, we'll post an MP3 on the FTP site, and/or email it to you. For the basic session fee, you'll get one revision as long as it's the same day, or early the next. Once the project is finished, we'll post the full WAV version (or whatever file format you specify) on our secure FTP site, or mail you a CD (for a small material and shipping charge)."
Click here to view Kasim's page on the site (with clips of The Ikon, The One Sure Thing and Sacrifice available to download (plus photos) and here for details about a session with Kasim.
All musicians charge $400 for 3 hours on the website and there are other musicians who have had relationships with Kasim listed too e.g. Mark Alexander (from Meat Loaf's band) and John Siegler (from Utopia).

Tuesday 6th December 2005
Kasim in Dr Pepper advert
09.30 - Apparently Kasim Sulton can be heard in the Dr Pepper advert which is currently being shown on US television!
The Meat Loaf song I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That) is used as the background music in this advertisement for the soft drink and Kasim's distinctive vocals can clearly be heard.
Kasim in Print
02.00 - Kasim Sulton (or, in this case, Sultan) receives a couple of mentions on page 82 of the book All Night Long...the True Story of Bon Jovi by Mick Wall about his appearance with the band at The Brit Awards in 1994. The mention says:
"Dave [Bryan] and Alec [John Such] had been replaced, for this occasion anyway, by Alda Nova and Meat Loaf's Kasim Sultan respectively.
"We met Kasim on the flight over here and said "D'ya wanna play bass?""" was Richie's [Sambora] unusual explaination as to why the former Utopia man was stepping in.
" (At this appearance Bon Jovi (with Kasim) played I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, plus Kasim played I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That) with Meat Loaf.)
KasimInfo.com
01.45 - Two pieces of good news today!
Firstly the domain name KasimInfo.com has been renewed for another year!
Secondly, by popular demand (well, 2 people e-mailed me to ask where it was this year!), The Kasim Sulton Advent Calendar has made it's return!
Each year on KasimInfo.com there is an advent calendar in the run-up to Christmas. Only one door can be opened each day (the other links to various different websites). When you click on the door for today it will lead to a page with anything from some of Kasim's music to photos of him to facts or questions about him! As some people only have Internet access at work, the links for Saturday and Sunday each week will be available on Monday too. Enjoy...!

This item has been listed two times before but now it has been reduced by $100 to $899.99 (plus $39.95 shipping). Currently no bids have been placed and the auction ends on Thursday.
The guitar and vest were used on the Meat Loaf Bat Out Of Hell 2 Tour in 1994 and originally all of these items were donated by Kasim as a prize in a competition in a guitar magazine.
