Tonight Kasim Sulton plays a gig as part of Todd Rundgren's band in San Francisco, CA
|
Kasim Sulton in San Francisco, CA tonight
12.15 - Tonight Kasim Sulton plays the third gig of The Todd Rundgren Summer 2009 Tour. The gig tonight is at Slim's in San Francisco, CA.
Slim's opened in 1988 by Boz Scaggs and "is a live music nightclub dedicated to providing the public with excellent service, a congenial atmosphere, good food & drinks, and the finest of American Roots Music--Blues, R&B, Cajun/Zydeco, Jazz, Alternative, and more". The venue consists mainly of an open floor with one end of the floor being the performance stage. (From what I can remember from visiting there in 2000, the stage isn't very high.) The address of the venue is 333 11th Street, San Francisco, CA, 94103-4313. This venue is the sister venue of The Great American Music Hall where Todd Rundgren played in 2007.
Tickets for the gig tonight are $25 and can be purchased from this link. This is a General Admission All Ages gig (althought the website says that no "babes in arms" are allowed!). Doors open at 7pm and the gig starts at 8pm. The opening act will be Paul Freeman again.
The last time that Kasim Sulton played at Slim's was on 8th and 9th June 2000 on the Todd Rundgren Half Twisted Tour. The last time that he played in San Francisco was on 13th September 2007 (with Todd Rundgren).

Kasim Sulton on UK National TV
07.00 - Kasim Sulton's voice can clearly be heard in adverts on Channel Four (a national UK television station) for a new Meat Loaf compilation album called Hits Out Of Hell.
Kasim Sulton plays bass and sings background vocals on several of the tracks on the album which was released on 8th June.
The album contains no new material but the track listing is:
1. Bat Out Of Hell
2. Read Em And Weep
3. Midnight At The Lost And Found
4. Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad
5. Dead Ringer For Love
6. Modern Girl
7. I'm Gonna Love Her For The Both Of Us
8. You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night)
9. Razor's Edge
10. Paradise By The Dashboard Light
11. I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)
12. I'd Lie For You (And That's The Truth)
Apparently the album can be purchased as a download too and is selling well so may make an appearance in the album charts on Sunday.

Kasim Sulton on the TR Summer Tour
06.45 - So far no reviews of last night's Todd Rundgren gig in Seattle, WA have been posted online (but, with the time difference, the gig will have only finished a few hours ago!).
The next gig on The Todd Rundgren Summer 2009 Arena Tour is tomorrow at Slim's in San Francisco, CA

Kasim Sulton at The Triple Door, Seattle tonight
03.45 - Tonight Kasim Sulton plays the second concert of The Todd Rundgren Summer 2009 Arena Tour. The concert tonight is at The Triple Door in Seattle, Washington.
The address of the vneue is 216 Union Street, Seattle, WA, 98101. Click here to view the venue website. Apparently the venue was a 1920s-era vaudeville theater which has been renovated. The concert tonight starts at 8.00pm. The website has stopped selling tickets online as the tickets have nearly sold out! Tickets are $45 and the opening act is Paul Freeman.
Doors for this concert open at 6.00pm and it is "festival style" which means that other people may also be seated at your table. The venue has an extensive menu (it can be viewed at this link) which "embraces the culinary traditions of China and Southeast Asia. We preserve traditional recipes from the East to create dishes rarely found in the West".
Todd Rundgren last played at this venue on 1st October 2008 and before that on 9th July 2008 (without Kasim). A couple of the reviews at the July gig mentioned that the sound wasn't very good but that it was fine at the October gig.

Kasim Sulton on the new Meat Loaf album
08.30 - This is a direct quote from Kasim Sulton regarding the new Meat Loaf album that is currently being recorded in California. Kasim said that he thinks the album is "Fantastic" and "I think it will probably be the best Meat Loaf album yet".
The album is being produced by Rob Cavallo who has produced albums by artists including Green Day, the Goo Goo Dolls, Chris Isaak and Alanis Morissette.

Kasim Sulton in Norway - video
05.00 - Todd Rundgren's set at the Norwegian Wood Festival on Saturday has been streamed on the Internet by NRK TV here.
Kasim Sulton can clearly be seen on stage, although there's not as many close-ups as his fans would like (for example during Courage he is the only person who does not get a close-up!).
Many thanks to TRiFanOK for finding this stream.

Kasim Sulton's week
04.45 - This week Kasim Sulton embarks on the US leg of the Summer Todd Rundgren 2009 Tour.
After playing the festival in Oslo, Norway on Saturday, Kasim flew to Seattle yesterday for the gig tomorrow. The third gig is 810 miles (13 hours by road) south in San Francisco, CA two days later (Thursday).
The San Francisco gig is the first of three gigs in three days as they play Los Angeles, CA on Friday and Las Vegas, NV on Saturday. The distance between San Francisco and Los Angeles is 381 miles south (6 hours with no traffic by road) and between Los Angeles and Las Vegas is 278 miles east (4.5 hours by road).
Kasim Sulton will then fly the 2,500 miles home as the next gig on the tour is not until the following Sunday (28th).

Kasim Sulton in Oslo, Norway tonight
00.01 - Tonight Kasim Sulton plays the first gig of the Summer leg of the Todd Rundgren 2009 Tour. The gig tonight is part of the Norwegian Wood Festival in Lysaker (Oslo), Norway.
The Summer leg of the tour lasts 22 days and they play 10 gigs (with a week off during the tour).
The gig tonight is the only one in Europe and is the first time in several years that Todd Rundgren has played in Norway. The Norwegian Wood Festival is a large annual festival that has been running since 1992. Artists who have played there in previous years include Johnny Cash, Jethro Tull, Sting, David Bowie, Tori Amos, Brian Wilson, Alanis Morissette and Foo Fighters.
This year Neil Young performed on Thursday, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds yesterday and Keane and Duffy will headline tomorrow on the final day of the festival.
Today the other acts on the bill are The Pretenders at 5.15pm and Big Bang (a popular Norwegian group) play at 9pm. Todd Rundgren is due on stage at 7pm.
The festival sells 8,000 tickets for each day. A day pass costs NKK525 ($82). (That's how they can afford to fly these bands to Norway for just one gig!)
Unfortunately the weather forecast for when Kasim is due on stage is only 53 degrees with a 70% chance of precipitation. On the plus side, being so far north, sunset is not due until 10.40pm.
The name of the festival refers to The Beatles famous song Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown).

AWATS gigs in September
13.15 - PollStar.com here has an article that says that the US schedule of the AWATS gigs will last one week in September. They list the reason is that Roger Powell can only take that amount of time away from his full-time job.
The article states that the gig in Akron, Ohio will be the first gig of that week and that Kasim Sulton will be playing that week of gigs.

The Van Dyck, Schenectady, NY
09.15 - On Saturday 6th at 6.15am there was a post that mentioned that The Van Dyck in Schenectady, NY (where Kasim Sulton has played several gigs over the past few years) has closed for business.
Apparently the good news is that the venue will be opening again later this month.
An extract from the Daily Gazette explains it as "The McDonald family will reopen the former Van Dyck jazz club in early June as a restaurant and entertainment club under the same name. The first floor of the Union Street building will feature a 100-seat restaurant and lounge, connected to an outdoor patio with a microbrewery. The restaurant will serve lunch and dinner six days a week. It will be closed Sundays. McDonald said the second-floor venue will play host to jazz, rock and blues as well as comedy shows. The second floor will also have a 40-seat banquet room for private parties.
The McDonald family has invested approximately $1 million into fine tuning the former jazz club since purchasing it in October. The amount includes the price the family paid to buy the property, $252,000, last November, plus $147,000 in back taxes, plus $70,000 to buy the Van Dyck’s microbrewing equipment. The family bought the Van Dyck at a foreclosure auction on 8th October. The late Marvin Friedman founded the restaurant in 1947 and turned it into a mecca for jazz aficionados.".
Many thanks to the kind person who forwarded the info regarding The Van Dyck.

The pictures have been added to the Photos section of KasimInfo.com or click here for the direct link.
Sadly The Van Dyck closed two months after this gig. Kasim played at this venue three or four times between 2002 and 2007. Each evening he played two sets.

Kasim recording Meat Loaf album
03.00 - Meat Loaf has posted a video online saying that he started recording a new album yesterday and says that Kasim Sulton is one of the musicians recording with him. Click here to view the video.
There was also an article online here about the album (currently the title hasn't been decided) and it says that it is being recorded at producer Rob Cavallo recording studio in Hidden Hills, CA.
Rob Cavallo has produced albums by artists including Green Day, the Goo Goo Dolls, Chris Isaak and Alanis Morissette.
I believe that this is the first time that Kasim Sulton has worked with Rob Cavallo.

Kasim announced for AWATS Akron gig
03.15 - It's been announced that Kasim Sulton will be playing as part of Todd Rundgren's band for the A Wizard, A True Star gig in Akron, Ohio on Sunday 6th September.
The full band will be Kasim Sulton, Jesse Gress, Prairie Prince, Greg Hawkes and Roger Powell which means that three quarters of Utopia will be on stage together for the first time since 1992!
It is not currently known if the same band will play all the AWATS gigs (although fans hope that will be the case!).
Another AWATS gig has been announced for Monday 8th February 2010. It will be at Paradiso in Amsterdam and is two days after the London gig. (Typically European gigs are always booked further in advance than American ones.)

Kasim Sulton in Nashville last Saturday night
04.45 - On Saturday evening Kasim Sulton played as part of a singer / songwriting circle at The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, TN.
Kasim's set list was:
Sacrifice
Set Me Free
The One Sure Thing
Watching The World Go By
Sometimes Love Is A Dangerous Thing
There Goes My Inspiration
Before She Was Gone
Don't Hold Me Back
Apparently Sometimes Love Is A Dangerous Thing was Kasim's best received song by the Nashville crowd. Kasim described the gig as "I was slightly nervous given the company I was in but I can't remember having a better time listening to other peoples songs and playing my own as well."
Kasim has updated his online journal here regarding this gig (including a couple of photos).

New TR gig...Europe this time
03.45 - A new gig has been discovered on the Internet for the summer leg of The Todd Rundgren Arena Tour.
The gig is on Saturday 13th June and is at the Norwegian Wood Festival in Lysaker, Norway. Todd will be playing on the day that The Pretenders are also on the bill. The venue website says that Todd will be playing with a full band.
This gig is only 4 weeks today and presumably this will not be the only European gig so it seems likely that more gigs in Europe will be added soon. Todd's first US gig is on Tuesday 16th June.
Many thanks to Sarah Kyndesen for this info.

Kasim Sulton's gig in Nashville, TN tonight
03.30 - Tonight Kasim Sulton will be playing a solo gig as part of a singer / songwriting circle at The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, TN.
The gig starts at 9.30pm (there's an earlier set by different musicians at 6.30pm) and appearing on the bill with Kasim will be Tommy Hambridge (who co-wrote Sometimes Love Is A Dangerous Thing with Kasim), George Teren and Bill Lloyd.
Tickets (from this link for this gig are $12 plus a $7 Food and Beverage Minimum.
The venue only has 21 tables available for reservation and for the early shows there are twenty-five spaces at the bar and on the benches that are on a first-come-first-served basis.
Click here to view the venue website. The address of the venue is 4104 Hillsboro Pike, Nashville, Tennessee, 37215.
Kasim described the venue and gig during his recent radio interview on The Core 90.3FM as "It's a pretty cool place. Everybody always goes there to show-case their songs. It's a big singer / songwriter club and it's pretty popular. A lot of people know about it and a lot of famous people have played there and everybody gets up on the stage and jam there. I was asked by a buddy of mine, Tommy Hambtridge who I've written a couple of songs with. He does a singer / songwriter circle there once every few months and he had an opening and asked if I wanted to do it. I happened to be in town and said that I would be honored to come in and play. Everybody takes a turn to sing a song, how they wrote it, what it means to them and then it goes to the next person."

The Basement Tapes
06.30 - As Kasim Sulton mentioned on the radio last weekend, his album The Basement Tapes is now available to purchase as a download at this link.
The original version of this album (called The Bassment Tapes) was released as a cassette in 1993. The album was then released on CD in 1998 and was re-named The Basement Tapes and had the additional track All The Right Reasons.
Also in 1998 a special 500 copies of a 2CD version of the album was available which were all signed by Kasim and numbered.
The 11 tracks can be downloaded for 99 cents each or the whole album costs $9.
TRBazaar.com stock the CD version of The Basement Tapes but it appears that they currently have none in stock.
