Kasim Sulton's solo gig at The Bitter End
18.45 - Welcome to the first of the "KasimInfo.com cut out and keep guides to the venues where Kasim Sulton will be playing solo gigs this winter"! This one looks at The Bitter End in New York City.
Kasim will be playing here on Friday 29th December and the gig is advertised as "The Kasim Sulton Band Holiday Show featuring Kasim Sulton & Special Guests". The venue website is here, tickets can be purchased here and more info is here. The gig starts at 8.00pm (doors are at 7.00pm) and tickets are $30 in advance (recommended) or $35 on the door.
Kasim has played at The Bitter End several times over the past few years, in fact this will be his third appearance here this year! However this promises to be a VERY special event! Usually artists are only allowed to play a 45 minute to an hour set but for this show Kasim's set is expected to last 2 hours! There are also no other artists listed that evening on The Bitter End website! One of the things I like least about this venue is that sometimes the next band will be coming in as Kasim is finishing his set but thankfully that won't be a problem at all for this gig!
I've written about this venue several times on this site but out of all the venues where Kasim has played solo gigs, this is one of my favorites. It's a wide stage so has three long rows of tables with seats. The front row leads right up to the stage and has 3 or 4 chairs each side, the second row have two chairs each side and the back row has chairs around tables in a booth kind of layout. From back wall to the stage is only about 30 or 40 feet so everyone can see clearly. There are also tables at both ends of the stage or you can stand in the bar area and still get a good view.
The sound is always good at this venue (and often Kasim will get his brother Alex to be his soundguy too) and it's well lit so you can see Kasim clearly wherever you sit!
This venue has a really relaxed atmosphere and Kasim always mixes with people afterwards so just hang around afterwards if you want to talk or have a photo taken with him! The venue has a two drink minimum policy if you sit at a table but the drinks are reasonably priced and they're often not strict about that rule! The venue is also very easy to find and there's loads of street parking around or an underground garage in the next block.

Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2007
08.30 - It only seems like yesterday that we were wishing Kasim Sulton a Happy Birthday(!) and today it's already time to wish him a Happy New Year! That's because today Kasim records Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2007 (with Meat Loaf).
The show will be aired on Sunday 31st December on the ABC Television Network and for the 35th consecutive year the show will lead America into the New Year, as Dick Clark and Ryan Seacrest host three specials from New York. In all there will be three and a half hours of special New Year's programming:
Dick Clark's Primetime New Year's Rockin' Eve 2007 - 10.00-11.00 pm EST
Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2007, Part 1 - 11.35 pm - 1.05 am EST
Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2007, Part 2 - 1.05 - 2.05 am EST
The musical parts of this show is being recorded in advance in Hollywood and New York. There was a recording last night in Hollywood and the New York one is next Wednesday but Kasim is recording today (in Hollywood) from 9.30am onwards - click here for more info. Other artists appearing on the show are Natasha Bedingfield, Fergie and RBD.
As previously stated Kasim Sulton will be playing with Meat Loaf (and the rest of the band) today. It is not known which song(s) they'll be playing but it seems likely that it'll be from one or other of the Bat Out Of Hell albums.
For this reason Kasim will not be playing at The New Cars concert tonight in Lake Tahoe, NV (which he was never advertised to play).

Kasim Sulton's Birthday
01.15 - Today is Kasim Sulton's 51st birthday (even though he still only looks about 35!!)
Kasim will be spending today away from home, out on the West Coast. If you'd like to send a birthday message directly to Kasim then his e-mail address (which is available on the Contact page on KasimInfo.com) is KasimMusic@aol.com.

Kasim’s Birthday Over The Years
This article was posted a couple of years ago but may be of some interest to new visitors to KasimInfo.com. It looks at how Kasim Sulton has spent his birthdays over the years....
Other than the fact that Kasim was born in Brooklyn, NY and later moved to Staten Island, very little has been printed publicly about Kasim’s early years. In an interview with KasimInfo.com in July 2003, he was asked about his earliest ever memory and he responded that "We lived in Brooklyn in a huge old Victorian house in what is now the Marlborough Project on Coney Island. We lived right behind Lincoln High School. That was about 1960 and I just remember the backyard of that house and that there was a scrap yard behind us and my Mom had a cat called Tiger! There was a piano that someone had thrown away that was broken into pieces and I was fascinated with the inner workings of it."
It is known that Kasim celebrated his 21st birthday in Japan when he was on tour there with Utopia. Back when Kasim reached 21 (in 1976) people celebrated their 21st birthday as the big birthday, rather like the young people today celebrate their 18th birthday.
On Kasim’s 25th birthday John Lennon was shot in New York by Mark Chapman. As all fans of Kasim will know, Kasim was inspired to take up music after seeing The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show in the 1960s. Kasim has also spoken on stage several times about meeting John Lennon in the streets of New York City and he calls him the most spiritual Beatle. Kasim has also said on stage that he went to the 21 Club in New York that evening and was not impressed with Roy Thomas Baker’s comments on the event!
As anybody who regularly looks at KasimInfo.com will know, on the front page of the site there is a section called On This Day which relates each day what items of a public record Kasim did over the years. Unfortunately the vast majority of concerts / TV appearances that Kasim has made over the years are not (yet!) listed on the Internet but I have been able to establish that back in 1985 Kasim Sulton was touring on the Todd Rundgren A Capella tour. On 7th December they played a concert at The Agora in Hartford, CT and on 9th December they played at The Living Room in Providence, RI so on Kasim’s 30th birthday he had the day off from concerts and it is possible that he may have made it home as he was near enough!
In 1990 (Kasim’s 35th birthday) he had just completed a series of concerts with Hall and Oates in the United Kingdom 4 days previously so it seems likely that he also spent that day with his family.
In 1993 (Kasim’s 38th birthday) he was on tour with Meat Loaf in the United Kingdom. On 7th December Kasim played a concert at the Ice Rink in Whitby Bay, England and on 9th December he played at the Sheffield Arena, Sheffield, England so it seems that he had another day off on his birthday but unfortunately for him, away from home again.
During the years 1994 to 1998 Kasim was not away on the road touring but in 1999 he was on the Meat Loaf StoryTellers Tour. There was a concert originally booked for the day of his birthday at The Veteran’s Memorial Hall in Columbus, Ohio but Meat Loaf was ill that day so it was cancelled.
In 2000 (Kasim’s 45th birthday) he was again at home but in 2001 Kasim Sulton played a concert on the Night Of The Proms Tour with Meat Loaf at the Olympiahalle in Munich, Germany. This concert was televised and when it was broadcast it was quite clear that people on stage (starting with John Miles) were wishing him a Happy Birthday as they had spotted that members of the German Meat Loaf Fan Club had made a banner wishing him the same!
In 2002 for Kasim’s 47th birthday he was on the Meat Loaf and Friends Just Havin’ Fun For The Holiday Tour. There were concerts on 7th December at the Westbury Music Center in Westbury, NY and one on 9th December at the FM Kirby Center in Wilkes Barre, PA so it is just about possible that Kasim managed to get home for his birthday last year too.
In 2003, Kasim’s 48th birthday, he awoke in Belfast, Northern Ireland before later travelling to England as he had a concert the next evening in Newcastle Upon Tyne.
In 2004, Kasim's 49th birthday, he was again at home and last year, Kasim's 50th birthday, he was again at home although he did play a performance of Movin' Out on Broadway.
This year Kasim will be on the West Coast but thankfully appears to have the day off!.
However Kasim celebrates his birthday this year, I am sure that every reader of this website would like to wish him a Happy Birthday and a successful and personally rewarding year ahead. |

Photos of Kasim Sulton on Strictly Come Dancing
16.00 - There are a couple of good photos of Kasim Sulton with Meat Loaf and Marion Raven from the set of the UK TV show Strictly Come Dancing back in October on Meat Loaf's offical website MeatLoaf.net. Kasim is in the first two photos (with the second one being the best shot).
Many thanks to Vicki Pearson for finding these photos.

Kasim at The House Of Blues, West Hollywood
10.00 - On The New Cars official website TheNewCars.com there are a couple of photos of Kasim Sulton at The House Of Blues in West Hollywood, CA on Tuesday evening. Links to all the photos are here and here and direct links to the photos of Kasim are:
A lot of microphone.
Kasim Sulton.
From side stage.
This one looks as though Kasim is ducking under Todd's guitar!
The New Cars.
There's also one photo of the Meet and Greet here.
According to that website they added the theme song from Borat into the show and 2 people told me that Kasim showed absolutely no sign of jetlag on stage!

Car bumper sticker suggestion #2:
Tuesday 5th December 2006
24 days until The Kasim Sulton Band's Holiday Show in New York City.
Today Kasim Sulton plays as part of The New Cars at The House Of Blues in Los Angeles, CA.
|
Kasim Sulton at The House Of Blues, Los Angeles
17.30 - Tonight Kasim Sulton plays another concert on the Winter leg of The New Cars Road Rage Tour. The concert tonight is at The House Of Blues on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA. The concert starts at 8.00pm and tickets are available here. As this is a General Admission venue it is still possible to buy a ticket today and get near the front! Tickets are $50 (plus charges).
The House of Blues is a 1,000 person capacity, 3 story venue. The area where the concert takes place is on the first floor and the Porch restaurant on the second floor has rail tables and standing room bars that overlook the concert area. Kasim Sulton last played at this venue on 14th March when The New Cars held their big press conference! His previous visit here was in 2000 on Todd Rundgren's Power Trio Tour (the photo to the left is of that concert).
The venue address is 8430 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90069 and opened 12 years ago. The opening act is again Persephone's Bees. The stage is 30 foot wide by 20 foot deep and can be adusted in height from 3'6" to 5'6" so the view is very good. There are 3 dressing rooms on the 3rd floor at this venue:
The Green Room (20'x10') holds 12-20 people and has a changing/make-up area, restroom with shower.
Dressing Room #2 (10'x15') holds 8-12 people and has a private restroom.
Dressing Room #3 (9'x13') holds 6-10 people.
The main downside to this venue is the lack of parking in the immediate area. They are very hot on illegally parked vechicles too (I received a ticket in 2000!).

The New Cars Road Rage Tour Map
06.15 - Today will probably be the longest day of 2006 for Kasim Sulton as it will last 32 hours!
Kasim woke this morning in London, England and today flies out to Los Angeles, California for a concert as part of The New Cars in Los Angeles, CA! After years of travelling worldwide, thankfully Kasim is one of those lucky people who can sleep on a plane (having sat next to him I can vouch for that!) but an 8 hour time difference is still not an easy thing to get over. Flights from London to Los Angeles take about 11 and a half hours so, with the time difference, you appear to land only 3 and a half hours after you've taken off! So that if he left for example at 11.30am London time then he would land at about 3.00pm Los Angeles time but that is 11.00pm London time!
The problem I had for this leg of The New Cars Road Rage Tour Map is where to start it! Should I start it from London or from Los Angeles or from Staten Island (where the map usually starts)? As ultimately for Kasim the tour starts at his home, I've decided to go with starting from Staten Island as that's where I've usually started and ended tours from on these Tour Maps and Mileage (and he does have to pass over one part of the East Coast at some point in his journey today!).
Therefore Staten Island to Los Angeles, CA is 2,830 miles (which would take about 40 hours by road!). Kasim's last leg of The New Cars Road Rage Tour ended at 3,035 miles so:
Kasim's New Cars Winter Tour Mileage (estimated) - 5,865 miles.

Monday 4th December 2006
25 days until The Kasim Sulton Band's Holiday Show in New York City.
Today Kasim Sulton will be at The Royal Variety Performance in London, England.

Kasim's online journal updated and message to his mailing list
20.15 - Kasim Sulton has updated his online journal with some photos of the rehearsals of The Royal Variety Performance tonight.
He also appears to be playing The New Cars concert tomorrow evening in Los Angeles! The time difference between London and Los Angeles is 8 hours so it means that Kasim will have a 32 hour day tomorrow plus playing a gig!
Kasim has also sent a message to his mailing list about his forthcoming solo gigs. (Click here to read it if you didn't receive it). One nice phrase is "Seriously, after all this work for other people, other bands, I'm looking forward to doing these solo shows. It's a good feeling to know that I can do this a couple of times a years in preparation for the time when I do these shows and these shows only.".
|
Kasim Sulton at The Royal Variety Performance
19.30 - Tonight Kasim Sulton played at The Royal Variety Performance in London, England and he was actually on stage during part of Meat Loaf's set!
Meat Loaf lip-synched to his new single Blind As A Bat and then sang DeadRinger For Love with R&B singer Jamelia (who missed a couple of lines!). The two songs were set in a bar and Kasim was standing by a pinball machine during Blind As A Bat with some of the male dancers. He was visibly chatting to them throughout the whole song and at one point stood at the front of the machine as though he was playing it! When Meat Loaf finished the song he walked past Kasim and it was nice to see that Kasim gave him a reassuring pat on the back!
The show itself lasted 3 and a half hours(!) and will be televised on UK TV next Tuesday. The biggest reception was given to Barry Mannilow who received more cheers than even Rod Stewart (who was the headliner) and Take That!
|
Kasim Sulton at The Royal Variety Performance
01.15 - Tonight Meat Loaf plays at The Royal Variety Performance at The London Coliseum in London, England. The original plan for this performance was that Meat Loaf's band was going to play with him but due to the nature of this show (see below), this has now been shelved and Meat Loaf will lip-synch one song and sing live the other. The two songs he will perform are his UK single which comes out next Monday Blind As A Bat, and he will duet with R&B star Jamelia on DeadRinger For Love.
Kasim Sulton (as Meat Loaf's Musical Director) will be at the show (and rehearsals) but will not be on the stage. There is band which plays in the orchestra pit for all the artists in the show and Kasim possibly will be playing there (I know where I'll be looking when Meat Loaf is on stage!!!).
The Royal Variety Performance is one of those great British traditions that most "hip" people thing is cringe-worthy but is still performed year after year and is televised. This year it will be on UK TV next Tuesday (12th). Tonight's show is the 78th Royal Variety Performance. The first one was on 1st July 1912 in the presence of Their Majesties King George V (the present Queen's grandfather) and Queen Mary. Apparently the King said that he would attend a once-yearly variety show provided the profits went to The Variety Artistes Benevolent Fund. This fund provides most of the funding to maintain homes for retired members of the entertainment profession and their dependants. (For 16 years The Royal Variety Performance was not presented owing to world conflict and Royal Family mourning.) Since that first event, over six thousand artists from all over the world have given their services freely to the show. Queen Elizabeth II is the patron of the show and the fund, but tonight's performance is in the presence of Prince Charles (the Prince Of Wales) and the Duchess Of Cornwall (formerly Camillia Parker Bowles).
Amongst the artists appearing tonight are Rod Stewart, Barry Mannilow, Take That, Sugababes, James Morrison and John Barrowman plus a whole host of UK stars who are not known in America. As well as musicians there are comedians and other variety acts plus they have the casts from the musicals Spamalot and The Sound Of Music which are currently playing in London.
The London Coliseum was completed in 1904 and is mainly known as the home of the English National Opera. The theatre has recently completed a magnificent $60m major refurbishment. Prince Charles will be sitting in the Royal Box which is located on the first tier at stage left. All artists have to bow to the Royal Box at the end of their act and after the show there is a line-up to meet them. The show usually lasts several hours and starts at 7.30pm (2.30pm EST) but the tickets ask that people are in their seats at 7.00pm because they are not supposed to arrive after Royalty. Also on the tickets it says "Evening Dress is Requested"!
When The Beatles played at The Royal Variety Performance in 1963 John Lennon famously joked "Will the people in the cheaper seats clap your hands? All the rest of you, if you'll just rattle your jewellery." Tickets for this (charity) event vary from $400 to $75.

Kasim Sulton Magazine
13.15 - Many thanks to the kind person who has already forwarded a copy of Kasim Sulton Magazine #23. Please click here to download it.
|
KasimInfo.com
12.15 - The good news is that the domain name KasimInfo.com has been renewed for another year!
The sad news is that The Kasim Sulton Magazine will no longer be produced. (Due to the computer problems I've had for the past year, it was impossible to produce it recently anyway!) Also, since I lost a lot of files when my computer crashed in November 2005, I have no copy of Kasim Sulton Magazine #23 to put online so if anyone has a copy, please could they forward it to SueW@KasimInfo.com. This edition was the one which had articles about Something's Gonna Happen (news round-up), Kasim's Solo Gig in Manchester, England, Meat Loaf's Hair Of The Dog Tour (14 pages) and Kasim's Signature Bass.
Also this year the Kasim Sulton Advent Calendar won't be produced but KasimInfo.com will take on a festive feel from Friday onwards!

Tickets (Update)
Kasim Sulton
Tickets went on sale yesterday for Kasim Sulton's solo gig on Wednesday 24th January at The Ark in Ann Arbor, MI. (Click here for the link.)
It appears that seats are still 5 seats left in the front row of the reserved seats but it's likely that most people have opted for the unreserved seats as they are nearer the stage. Unfortunately that page on TicketMaster only allows purchases from fans in US and Canada and not worldwide.
Meat Loaf
Tickets went on presale for the concert in Orlando on Saturday 7th April for fan club members. There were two types of tickets available - $89.50 or $200 for a VIP package which includes a T-shirt and a signed art print. Unfortunately once again there were problems with the presale through FanFire as at the time the tickets went on sale, everybody received a "sold out" message. Later this was corrected and actual seat locations were given but later purchases had to be made without knowing exact seat locations. 40 minutes after the sale started there were second row seats available for the (cheaper) $89.50 option.
Tickets for 10 more of the concerts go on presale on Tuesday at 10.00am local venue time. Tickets for all the announced concerts are expected to go on general sale on Saturday (9th). Ticketing and venue links have been added to The Meat Loaf Seize The Night Tour page or click here for all the dates in calendar format.
Last night Meat Loaf posted on his official website that there would be 32 more US gigs added in the second leg of the tour which starts in July.

05.45 - Kasim Sulton
A reminder that tickets go on sale today for Kasim Sulton's solo gig on Wednesday 24th January at The Ark in Ann Arbor, MI. Click here for the link to purchase tickets from 10.00am EST (please form an orderly queue behind me!).
Unlike other venues the cheaper seats are actually closer to the stage than the (slightly) more expensive seats. For $25 you can purchase a reserved seat which are in a tier so above the seats in the dance floor area. For $20 you can purchase the unreserved seats and then wait in line on the night to be seated. The unreserved seats are in the dance floor area and are either rows of seats or seats at tables depending on the artist.
Meat Loaf
The Fan Club presale for most of the announced concerts has been moved from today to Tuesday (5th) at 10.00am (local venue time). The exception is the Orlando concert which does go on sale at 10.00am today. Click here for the ticketing link. The non-fan club sale appears to start next Saturday (9th).

1) After an early start, Kasim grabs a quiet moment on stage to snatch 40 winks and wakes to discover the pixies have stolen his cigar!
Thanks again to everybody who suggested captions and congratulations to Kathy Wilson for the winning caption. Thanks too to Gary "Goat" Goveia for the photo.

Change of date for a Meat Loaf concert
16.45 - The Syracuse, NY concert was originally listed as 25th February but has now been changed to 22nd March.
The only concert currently scheduled for Feruary is on 23rd February in Pala, California. That gig is listed on the venue website so appears to be correct.
Meat Loaf's official website MeatLoaf.net lists two prices for tickets for the Orlando concert (the only gig currently with details but appears to be a good indication) which is $89.50 for a "premium reserved ticket" and $200 for "one premium reserved ticket located within the first 4 rows, an autographed Limited edition 12 X 36 Fine Art PRINT (3 Bat Out Of Hell Album Litho Images - "Monster Is Loose" Tour '07) and an exclusive, never to be produced again T-Shirt.".

It's possible that the above isn't correct as in early November 2006 Aspen Miller (Meat Loaf's female singer) posted "we've just been doing back to back quick appearances around the country on television. An absolutely exhausting schedule, lots of airplanes, and not much sleep, but pretty much doing the same couple of songs over and over". After I read that I posted on a Meat Loaf mesageboard asking fans if they had heard of any more than the 3 TV shows (1 in New York on 10/27 and 2 in Los Angeles on 10/31) reported above but nobody had. It's possible that they did play on some TV shows that none of the 2,300 or so people on that board worldwide had seen but it seems unlikely. Assuming that the items above are correct then Kasim wasn't home much during October 2006!
We do know that the first two weeks of the month were spent in rehearsals for the Mannheim, Germany and Royal Albert Hall, London concerts and then they played those concerts on 10/14 and 10/16 respectively. On 10/18 they played a radio show in London before most of Meat Loaf's band flew home for a week off - but not Kasim! He and Mark Alexander stayed in London and appeared on 2 TV shows on 10/21 and 10/24 before flying to New York. (It's not known what he was doing on the other days that week.) 3 days later (10/27) Kasim had the very early start to play on The Today Show in New York City. He then flew to Los Angeles and recorded both The Megan Mullally Show and The Jimmy Kimmel Show.
October seems to be a busy month each year for Kasim as last year he started the month with an appearance and mini-performance at GuitarFest in New Berlin, WI. Kasim then spent the next two and half weeks in Los Angeles rehearsing with The New Cars (this was all "top secret" at the time!). Kasim then returned to the East Coast around 22nd of the month and played 4 performances of Movin' Out.
In October 2004 Kasim played his first performance of Movin' Out (plus 5 other performances that month), plus he spent about a week in Japan playing on The Todd Rundgren Liars Tour plus making an appearance at a Fans' Party which included Kasim playing a couple of songs!

Kasim on Dick Clarke's New Years Eve Show???
11.30 - As mentioned here on Wednesday, Meat Loaf will be appearing on the 35th annual Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. It's not known yet whether Kasim will be performing with him too (although it's described as a "performance" so it seems likely) but according to this post on a dance messageboard, the organizers are looking for dancers for the show - application details are posted there! The post also says that the recordings will take place in Burbank, CA on Saturday 9th December plus there will be another recording on an unspecified date in New York City.
If (and I stress if) Kasim Sulton is involved in the 9th December taping then it will fit in well with The New Cars gig in San Francisco the next evening!
Many thanks to the kind person who sent me the dancing messageboard link.

Caption Competition
11.15 - Just a reminder that the caption competition closes tomorrow. The best 10 suggestions will be posted at 5.00pm. This competition has generated quite a lot of interest so please send any suggestions for an amusing caption of the unusual photo of Kasim Sulton below:
This photo was taken of by Gary "Goat" Goveia outdoors at The Today Show in New York City on 27th October. Gary explained it by the fact that people blink on average 4 or 5 times ever minute but as it was windy at the taping, Gary snapped this unusual shot!
Please e-mail any suggestions to SueW@KasimInfo.com.

Post from Meat Loaf mentioning Kasim
16.15 - Meat Loaf today made a post about The Royal Variety Show this coming Monday which mentioned Kasim Sulton. He speaks about not being allowed to perform live (which is a feature of The Royal Variety Show as there are so many artists) but he doesn't make it clear whether or not Kasim Sulton will be on the show even though they won't actually be playing.
Meat Loaf wrote (in part) "We are doing Dead Ringer live, and Blind As A Bat lip sync.. Because they would not let the band play, not even Mark, Kas and Paul. We don't have a track and it was too late to make one. I will be doing live ad libs at the end of Blind As A Bat. Wanted to do it live in the worst way, but the band they have playing could not play the song the way it should be.".
