Meat Loaf concert in Merrillville, IN
18.30 - There still appears to be a lot of doubt regarding the possible Meat Loaf promo gig on Wednesday 8th November at the Star Plaza Theater in Merrillville, IN. (See the post on 1st October for more info.)
To date only MetroMix.com appears to list the gig. They list two telephone numbers but the TicketMaster number don't know anything about the concert and the venue say that they have no listing for Meat Loaf (although they did say that there is nothing listed currently at the venue for that date).

Kasim's online journal updated
19.00 - Kasim Sulton has updated his online journal here about the past few weeks and the concert at The Royal Albert Hall last night.
Kasim includes the phrase "We played to a packed house at the Royal Albert Hall here in London and I can honestly say I don't ever remember enjoying a show as much. Everyone tried their hardest and did their best to make it as perfect a show as any live show could be and we managed to rise to the occasion.".
There are also some good photos of him here and here.

Kasim at The Royal Albert Hall
02.45 - Tonight Kasim Sulton plays a gig at The Royal Albert Hall in London, England. This concert is to promote Meat Loaf's album Bat Out Of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose which is released in UK next Monday.
This will be Kasim's second concert at The Royal Albert Hall (probably the most prestigious venue in London). The last time he played here was on Thursday 17th November 1994 and was the first concert of the UK's third leg of Meat Loaf's Everything Louder Tour. That concert was in aid of The Prince's Trust charity in the presence of Britain's Prince Charles who is the patron of the charity. Afterwards Kasim was introduced to him.
The Royal Albert Hall opened in 1871 and since then has hosted over 150,000 performances of various shows. It is probably most famous for the Promenade Concerts which are held each summer. These are a series of classical music concerts that culminate in Last Night Of The Proms which is televised each year from the hall. It's a rousing night that is shamelessly British with loads of Union flags being waved and popular classics like Rule Britannia and Land Of Hope And Glory being sung at full volume by the promonaders! Other events here over the years include ballet, boxing, sumo wrestling, the Eurovision Song Concert, Miss World shows, rock concerts and lectures by such dignatories as the Dalai Lama and Stephen Hawking. On 18th April 1963 The Beatles played their first concert here and on 15th September the same year they were one half of a double bill with The Rolling Stones!
The Royal Albert Hall was the dream of Prince Albert who was the husband of Queen Victoria. He was instrumental in arranging the Great Exhibition in 1861 in nearby Hyde Park and then he had the idea of a permanent building to host concerts. Unfortunately he didn't live to see the hall being completed (having died meantime at the age of 42) but the famous landmark the Albert Memorial is just across the road from the hall.
This hall has an audience capacity of 7,000. (It used to be 8,000 but this has been reduced due to health and safety concerns.) Tours are available of the venue during the daytime which includes a chance to see rehearsals for that evening's show but unfortunately the tours do not run on Monday.
The Royal Albert Hall has 13 bars and 3 restaurants within the venue. The venue is built in a circular shape with one whole tier being devoted to boxes which have private catering within them at some events. The Royal Box is the one at the far back in direct line with the stage - it has perfect acoustics but is almost the furthest from the stage! The hall boasts some of the best acoustics in any venue in the world which is helped in part by large acoustic difusers in the ceiling.
According to an article on BusinessWire.com tonite (and at the New York City and Toronto concerts) they will be playing with a 16 piece orchestra. Apparently NOTION Software (which this article is about) will make this "sound like a 60 piece orchestra"!
The concert tonight starts at 7.30pm (doors open at 6.45pm) and the concert is expected to be in two acts. Although Kasim has made visits to London in the past couple of years (for example Yellow Cab was recorded here last year), he hasn't played a concert in this city since Todd Rundgren's Liars Tour in July 2004 when he played at the Royal Festival Hall.

Ball Of The Stars
00.01 - Tonight Kasim Sulton will be playing a set with Meat Loaf at Ball Der Sterne (Ball Of The Stars) in Mannheim, Germany. This is described as "the social highlight in the southwest of Germany". This is a charity event and is arranged by Radio Regenbogen (Radio Rainbow). This gala event has been held each year since 1990 and in 2004 had guests including Cliff Richard, Paul Young and Dallas actor Larry Hagman. To date these events have raised two million euros ($2m) for charity.
This event is being held at the Rose Garden which is part of the convention center in Mannheim. (The nearest international airport is Frankfurt.) There is a very strict dress code at this event (i.e. Kasim Sulton T-shirts are not allowed!!). For an example, see this link.
This year apparently there will be a band playing Mozart while people are eating (as 2006 marks 250 years since his birth) and then The Hollies are due to play before Meat Loaf is expected to perform a one hour set at midnight.
(For those regular readers who like the irrelevant trivia that is often posted here, apparently for the 2004 event there were 2,000 guests who ate from 16 different cook areas (plus 30 drink staions) off 30,000 plates using 15,000 pieces of cutlery, drank out of 40,000 glasses and used 25,000 napkins!)

Message from Kasim
14.15 - A message from Kasim Sulton was posted on The New Cars' official website TheNewCars.com yesterday.
As the message may disappear at a future date, it says:
"By now, most of you who frequent this site have learned that I'll be able to join the band on a number of shows in November and December.
I'm extremely happy about this. The guys have been gracious enough to allow me the ability to step in and do whatever shows I can between Nov. 1st and Dec. 17th.
For me, this means virtually no time off for the next three months but it's well worth the lost sleep for me to be back with a group of friends and musicians that are the best I've ever been involved with.
I'm sure that Atom Ellis will be a wonderful replacement for me while I take care of my other commitments. From what I gather, he's very accomplished, fully prepared and cute to boot!
My only request is that you treat him with the same amount of love and respect that you have so unselfishly shown me over the last nine months.
The dates that I'll be on will be posted here in the coming weeks but I'd like it if my presence didn't affect your decision to attend any single show. The band will be great either way.
Kasim"
The 10 dates that Kasim is currently expected to play (subject to change) are listed here.

It's All Coming Back To Me Now
01.00 - Meat Loaf's first single from his forthcoming album Bat Out Of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose will be released in UK on Monday 16th October and in US on Monday 23rd October. The first single will be called It's All Coming Back To Me Now.
This is a song which was written by Jim Steinman in 1983 and was originally meant for the Meat Loaf album Bat Out Of Hell II but the story goes that they opted for the song Anything For Love instead on that album. The track was recorded by Pandora's Box on their album Original Sin but it was Celine Dion who had a massive worldwide hit with it in 1996. Her version reached #2 in US and #3 in UK. Kasim Sulton's background vocals (along with Todd Rundgren) can clearly be heard throughout the whole song.
Meat Loaf's version is a duet with the Norweign singer Marion Raven (who Meat Loaf said at MixFest at the end of September has had 7 #1 hits in Asia). This version of the track can be heard at this link.
If Meat Loaf's version of It's All Coming Back To Me Now is a hit, then this will be the first time that Kasim will have been in the charts with the same song by two different artists!

Kasim Sulton News

The graphic below is a pictorial display of the number of items. The highest point (it actually goes off the scale!) is in March which was when they held the big press conference of The New Cars. There is also a good cluster of items in May and June which is when the band was touring and getting reviews, plus when they had to stop the tour.

18.15 - Another gig has been added to The New Cars 2006 Road Rage Tour. It's on Wednesday 1st November in Elmira, NY.
It hasn't been announced yet whether or not Kasim Sulton will be playing this gig too but it looks unlikely as that week he has a gig in Los Angeles, CA on the Tuesday (with Meat Loaf), one on the Thursday in New York City (with The New Cars), on the Saturday in Toronto, ON (Meat Loaf) and on the Sunday (5th) in New York City (The New Cars). Thankfully he'll be flying between gigs and not driving but that's still a lot of travelling!
The New Cars Tour page will be updated with all venue and ticketing links soon.

Tonight Kasim Sulton plays a Meat Loaf promo gig in Boston, MA
|
Kasim's gig with Meat Loaf in Boston, MA
09.00 - Tonight Kasim Sulton plays the first promo gig as part of Meat Loaf's band for the forthcoming album Bat Out Of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose. This gig was only arranged recently and is the only gig in US before they set off for almost a month of promotion in Europe.
The gig tonight is in Boston, MA (about 4 hours and 228 miles from Staten Island) and is part of a radio festival concert. It is being held at the Agganis Arena at Boston University which is located within Boston University's new $225 million John Hancock Student Village. Agganis Arena is reported to be a "state-of-the-art, multipurpose sports and entertainment center", also described as "a 286,134 square-foot premier venue with 6,300 seats for hockey and ice shows, the arena is expandable to over 7,200 seats for concerts, sporting events, and family shows".
To cover the creature comforts first, apparently there are 6 concession stands in the venue concourse with "multiple specialty kiosk locations around the concourse offering over 44 points-of-sale". There are also 15 public restrooms with parity for men and women.
As this venue mainly caters for sporting events there appears to be no actual "star" dressing rooms but there are several team dressing rooms "backstage" as well as smaller rooms that referees usually use!
Some (interesting?) facts about the building itself are that it was constructed of 3,591 tons of steel, which was made up of 4,943 total pieces of steel which were joined together by 45,970 bolts! There are 8 bow-shaped steel arena roof trusses which give the building its distinctive shape. The trusses are 22 feet high at their midpoint and 212 feet at the longest span and each truss weighs approximately 70 tons. There are also 160,000 bricks that make up the exterior of the building. (What other website about a musician includes info about how many bricks are in a building that he's playing a gig in?!!)
This venue is named after Harry Agganis (known as The Golden Greek) who attended Boston University in the late 1940s and early 1950s and was well known for his outstanding athletic achievements. As well as playing baseball for the Boston Red Sox (being both the team's starting first baseman and their best hitter, achieving an impressive .313 batting average), he also was an All-American quarterback, holding school records for passing yardage, touchdown passes, punting average, and interceptions. Sadly Harry Agganis died in 1955 of a massive pulmonary embolism at the age of only twenty-six.
This show is arranged by the Mix Radio station in the Boston area and is an annual festival which has taken place for about the past 10 years. The doors to this event open at 4.30pm and the show itself starts at 5.30pm. There's nothing posted online about what time Kasim Sulton will take the stage but the recent publicity seems to indicate that Meat Loaf is the headline act so they will probably play last, although it doesn't say what time the show ends.
It's expected (but not confirmed) that most acts will only play a few songs. Other acts on the bill are Barenaked Ladies, James Blunt, Natasha Bedingfield, KT Tunstall, Rihanna and Augustana. This will be the first outing of this new version of Meat Loaf's band with both a new female singer and, for the first time for Meat Loaf, a percussionist. The band has been in rehearsals for the past two weeks so it'll be interesting to see how well they've gelled under Kasim's Musical Directorship!

Kasim and The New Cars
08.45 - Elliot Easton has posted a message here (and Kasim confirmed on stage last night) that Kasim Sulton WILL be playing some of The New Cars concerts in November and December after all!
To date there are 11 gigs that Kasim will play but they are subject to change if Meat Loaf's schedule changes. Currently the dates that Kasim will be playing are:
Nov. 5th - New York City
Nov. 17th - Foxwoods
Nov. 18th - Atlantic City
Nov. 28th - Saint Ignace
Dec. 6th - Los Angeles
Dec. 9th - Albuquerque
Dec. 10th - San Fransisco
Dec. 12th - Santa Rosa
Dec. 14th - Ventura
Dec. 16th - Las Vegas
Dec. 17th - Anaheim
Tickets for most of these shows are already on sale but some are General Admission so fans of Kasim should still be able to get to the front!
Elliot also says that at the shows where Kasim can not play Atom Ellis will be playing bass (but not singing lead on Drive or All Mixed Up)
.

Kasim's gig at The Bitter End
08.15 - Last night Kasim Sulton played his final gig of this leg of The Kasim Sulton 2006 Tour at The Bitter End in New York City. This gig was apparently streamed on the Internet (many thanks to Teresa S for that info) but unfortunately there was no way of knowing in advance that this was going to be the case as previously when he's played there the website has had a link so apologies for all those who missed it.
Kasim played for about an hour (the first act didn't turn up!) and his set list was:
Somebody Loves You
Yellow Cab
Libertine
Jane Doe
Drive
There Goes My Inspiration
Are You Happy Now?
Before She Was Gone
The One Sure Thing
Sacrifice
Don’t Hold Me Back
Minutes Slipping Past
One World
Photos and a review of the gig have been added to the The Kasim Sulton 2006 Tour section of the website or click here for the direct link. (AOL users may need to clear their chache before its visible.)
