New Cars News
17.45 - A note from Elliot Easton has been posted on The New Cars official website TheNewCars.com. Several fans had posted on the messageboard over the past few days about the lack on info from the band and about the tour so this appears to be in response to that.
Elliot says that he had his operation on Monday 12th June and has to rest it for 8 weeks (which takes us to 7th August). He also says that "There will be some make-up shows in September at some of the venues that we were scheduled to play this summer, and also we are planning another leg of the tour for late autumn, which will not only bring us back to some of the cities we have already visited, but some new ones as well!"

Kasim's solo gig in Greenville, SC
15.15 - Tickets for Kasim's solo gig on 24th August at The HandleBar in Greenville, SC can now be purchased online here. Tickets are only $16 or, if you don't want to book online, they can also be purchased via charge by phone on 800-594-TIXX (8499).
The other important thing to note about this gig is that Kasim's time has been changed from 9.15pm to 8.30pm.
This venue is for 18s and over but they do allow people under 18 if they are accompanied by a parent.
Doug Kennedy has confirmed that he will be playing with Kasim at this gig too.

To celebrate the forthcoming Kasim Sulton 2006 Solo Tour there's actually three videos featured of Kasim singing Nik Kershaw's Somebody Loves You from Kasim's appearance at Summerfest two years ago tonight.

Kasim Sulton's solo gig at The Bitter End
05.15 - Regular readers of KasimInfo.com will know that usually on the day of any concert Kasim Sulton plays with any artist, a little blurb is posted here about the venue so that fans who are not attending have some idea about the sort of place where Kasim is playing. As lots of fans have indicated that they haven't decided yet how many of Kasim's gigs they will attend, I thought it might be an idea over the next few days to give an idea of each venue beforehand too so that out of town fans especially will have an idea of what to expect and which venue(s) will suit them best.
The Bitter End is advertised as "New York City's Oldest Rock Club" and has a very prestigious history. Click here to read it all but since 1961 loads of people who are famous names now have played at this venue. Click here to read the list but it includes stars like Woody Allen, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, Hall & Oates and Stevie Wonder!
One of the defining characteristics of The Bitter End is the brick wall that the stage is set against and the photo above by Jennifer Salyer was taken there at one of the earlier gigs which Kasim Sulton and Doug Kennedy at the venue.
According to one website The Bitter End can hold up to 350 people but it's well arranged so that everyone can see really clearly. There are tables right up to the front of the stage plus booths on the back wall or you can opt to sit at tables to the side area so that you look across the stage. There is also a nice bar area as soon as you walk into the venue which offers a good view too. This is a venue that offers a good selection of drinks and (unlike clubs in London!) they are all reasonably priced. If you sit at a table they like you to have a minimum of two drinks but there is no restriction at the bar.
The venue is really easy to find as it's in the center of Greenwich Village (that's the pointy end of New York City for out of towners!) and if you do get lost just head to the long road that goes up the west side of Manhattan and you can see a turning for Bleecker Street from there - that's the way I always find it! The Bitter End website has a great page of directions which even includes if you're arriving by boat, helicopter or horse! There are also loads of places to park (for cars not helicopters!) in the immediate area too. If you can't find anywhere on the road, in the next block up Bleecker Street there's an underground parking lot which is very reasonably priced.
This will be Kasim's 4th solo gig in recent years here and as it's a very local gig for him, he gets a good crowd so advance booking is strongly advised. Although fans buy tickets for a particular artist the venue does not make people leave after each set so it's quite possible that as Kasim is the third artist on that evening that it may already be full if you just turn up and hope to buy a ticket on the door!
Kasim's gig on Saturday 15th July is the first gig on his 2006 Solo Tour and is due to start at 9.30pm and he's expected to play for at least an hour...hopefully more!

Tuesday 27th June 2006 - ErrorFM.com will have a feature about The New Cars in general and Kasim Sulton in particular today at 11.20am EST

Kasim Sulton's gig in Greenville, SC
17.45 - Kasim Sulton is now listed on the website for The HandleBar in Greenville, SC where he'll be playing a solo gig on 24th August.
The graphic below is Kasim's mention from the front page of the website and click here for (although not 100% accurate) another great mini-bio on the calendar page. As it will disappear after the gig, it says:
"Thurs. Aug. 24 – KASIM SULTON
Superstar bassist for Todd Rundgren's Utopia, The New Cars and Meat Loaf goes solo!
It would take IBM's supercomputer to calculate how many people on the planet have heard Kasim Sulton, either live or on one of millions upon millions of albums. Kasim is the bass player, vocalist and songwriter who co-founded the prog-rock group Utopia with Todd Rundgren; appeared on Meat Loaf's goliath Bat Out Of Hell album, one of rock's all-time bestsellers; was a full-fledged member of Blue Oyster Cult AND Joan Jett & the Blackhearts; sang backup vocals for Mick Jagger & The Stones; and, as a session musician, has played for everyone from Celine Dion to the Indigo Girls to Patti Smith. Thanks to his longstanding relationship with Rundgren -- in addition to having its own hits and four albums, Utopia opened for Led Zeppelin in England in 1979 and Sulton was THERE -- Sulton has been part of Rundgren's deal with The New Cars. Before he returns to another tour with Meat Loaf later this year, Kasim's bringing his own rocking back to The Handlebar, where he'll sing a bunch of the songs he wrote -- Utopia songs, Meat Loaf songs, Cars' songs. Indeed -- the Sultan of classic rock. At The Handlebar, Kas will bring another performer (or two) along with him -- and you could very well be surprised.
8:30 p.m. $16 (price incl. sales tax and music-licensing fee)"
At the top of that page there is also a photo of Kasim which you might recognize!
Tickets are not yet available on the venue website to purchase in advance of the gig (but it was only confirmed yesterday!).

Kasim's Valparaiso gig
10.30 - The Chicago Steet Theatre website has probably the best write-up of the tour so far about Kasim. Click here to view it.
The website also says that they are "working on someone special" to be the opening act for Kasim.
|
Final New Cars gig cancelled
09.00 - The final concert of the original New Cars Road Rage Tour at Moon Dance Jam in Walker, MN on 14th July has been canceled.
Even last week the organisers of this event were saying that officially the gig was not part of the tour so would be going ahead but there is now a message on the festival website here to say that Poison will instead be playing the 11.00pm slot on that evening. By coincidence the last time that Kasim Sulton played at this festival (with Meat Loaf in 2002) Posion were one of their opening acts that day.
So far the only rearranged date on the tour is still Atlanta, GA on 8th September.

Kasim Sulton's gig at The Cup, Staten Island
03.30 - Although it's not listed on the venue calendar yet, Kasim Sulton receives a mention on the front page of The Cup website plus he has his own page on the website here - the only artist to be so honored!
Tickets for his gig are $26.50 in advance (with a PayPal account) or can be purchased on the door.
(You may recongnize both the photo and blurb about Kasim on that page!!)

11.45 - Individual pages have been set up for all 5 of the confirmed Kasim Sulton solo gigs. These pages have more info about the venues and gigs (e.g. address, telephone numbers, capacity, ticketing, etc.).
The Kasim Sulton 2006 Tour page has been updated with links to these pages.

Another Kasim Sulton Solo Gig
10.00 - Although it's not listed on the venue website yet, apparently Kasim Sulton will be playing a gig on his 2006 Solo Tour at the Chicago Street Theatre in Valparaiso, IN.
This venue hosts plays during the week and on Sunday evenings opens its doors to various visiting musicians. Kasim was originally booked to play here a couple of years ago but had to cancel due to Meat Loaf changing his plans!
Tickets for this concert are $25 for the first front 5 rows and $20 for the remainder of the theater.
|
The New Cars Road Rage Tour
04.30 - gRAdy Moates has posted to a few mailing lists that a friend of his who frequently books shows of various kinds received a list of available artists from a well-known artist agency which included The New Cars for November and December!
So far the only confirmed rearranged date for The New Cars Road Rage Tour is 8th September in Atlanta, GA. Berlin will be the opening act for that concert and they now have it listed on their official website.
Meat Loaf posted this past weekend that he will be in the UK for "long lead press" from 1st to 6th July. On 11th July he's holding a press conference in New York City about Bat Out Of Hell III. Kasim Sulton has not been announced as appearing at it but Todd Rundgren, Desmond Childs (the producer of the album) and possibly Jim Steinman will be there. Meat Loaf is then doing promotion (without Kasim) around the US before the concert on 28th July at Toms River which Kasim will be playing. Bat Out Of Hell III is supposed to be released on 31st October with the single being released sometime in September. So how any promotion for these will affect the time that Kasim has to work as part of The New Cars is unknown. (On the plus side they are both managed by 10th Street Entertainment.)
As one fan once put it a couple of years ago Todd has Kasim by his heart but Meat Loaf has him by his balls!
|
Sunday 25th June 2006 - Kasim Sulton was supposed to have played a concert with The New Cars in Uncasville, CT tonight but the Road Rage Tour has been canceled.
|
Kasim Sulton Solo Tour
18.15 - According to this thread on DouglasRKennedy.com, Kasim has asked Doug Kennedy to play guitar at some of his solo gigs with him!
For those who are new to KasimWorld, Doug Kennedy has been playing gigs on and off with Kasim since 15th August 2001. Doug used to be in the Philadelphia based band The Isle Of Q and he also played lead guitar on We The People on Quid Pro Quo. Doug has said that he will be playing the 4 gigs which have already been announced (all on the East Coast).
(To be totally pedantic technically this is no longer a solo tour but Kasim always calls them solo gigs even when he's had two other musicians on stage with him so for the sake of argument on this website it's going to continue to be called Kasim's Solo Tour 2006.)
|
Kasim on MySpace.com
14.30 - Kasim now has a page on MySpace.com here.
|
Kasim's interview on WUWF Radio
13.00 - Click here to listen to Kasim Sulton's 40 minute interview last night with Greg Guzman and Rick Reynolds on WUWF Radio last night.
As well as playing Sacrifice, two Utopia tracks and a Rick Reynolds' track, Kasim talks about The New Cars, Elliot Easton, Todd Rundgren, producing Rick Reynolds and Kasim's own forthcoming solo tour. (Kasim said that he'll be singing Yellow Cab at his solo shows.)
Many thanks to Rick Reynolds for arranging the interview and to Vicki Pearson of RepublicOfLoafdom.com for the recording.
|
Review of The New Cars Hinckley concert
04.15 - WeeklyMusician.com has a review of The New Cars concert in Hinckley, MN on 1st June. It only mentions Kasim Sulton in passing but it does give the concert 5 out of 5 stars and includes the phrase "Truly an amazing night. 'Road Rage Tour 2006' is proving to be the hottest act in town, any town!".
There's also a different (posed) photo of the band which I haven't seen before.
|
Saturday 24th June 2006 - Kasim Sulton was supposed to have played a concert with The New Cars in Atlantic City, NJ tonight but the Road Rage Tour has been canceled.
|
Kasim at The Bitter End
20.00 - Kasim Sulton's gig at The Bitter End on Saturday 15th July is now listed on the venue website schedule here. As it will disappear after the gig, a screenshot of his mention is shown to the left.
Unfortunately it shows that there will be a total of six acts on the bill that evening. Kasim is listed as appearing at 9.30pm.
|
Kasim Sulton on the radio tonight!
10.45 - Kasim Sulton will be interviewed via the telephone on the radio tonight by Rick Reynolds. This interview will also stream on the Internet.
Rick Reynolds will be on the live radio show Blue Plate Special on WUWF. Rick will be talking about Kasim, playing some of Kasim's music and Rick will be performing a couple of the songs from their upcoming record live in the studio. Kasim also agreed to be a guest for part of the show tonight via the telephone.
You can listen at WUWF.org and clicking the "Listen Live" link. The whole show will be on from 10pm till midnight Central Time (an hour lateron the East Coast).
Kasim played bass and sang background vocals on Rick Reynolds' album Unstoppable last year and this August will be recording Rick's next album.

Kasim at The Saint
07.30 - Kasim Sulton is now listed on The Saint website for Saturday 29th July. It calls him "Rock Acoustic" and says that tickets are $15 (plus there will be an opening act before his set).
|
Kasim at The Bitter End
03.00 - A blurb about Kasim Sulton has been added to his Bitter End listing on TicketWeb.com. There are a couple of inaccuracies in it (for example Kasim has worked in the music business for over 31 years and the tour for Bat Out Of Hell III doesn't start until next year) but as it will disappear after the gig, it says:
"Kasim Sulton a highly coveted sideman singer / songwriter, is recognized and respected the world over for his work with other artists, including Meat Loaf, The [New] Cars, Todd Rundgren, Utopia, Joan Jett, Hall and Oates, Patti Smith, Patty Smyth, Mick Jagger, and Celine Dion to name just a few. His level of involvement has ranged from playing lead bass, keyboards, and / or guitar, to adding vocal harmonies, singing lead, and contributing as a songwriter, to producing entire albums, as he did with the Meat Loaf VH-1 StoryTellers CD, released in 1999. There isn't much he hasn't done in his 25 years in the music industry. As the highly successful "The New Cars" Road Rage Tour ended unexpectedly last week, due to a serious car injury to another band member, Kasim is set to tour solo (playing a mix of Cars, Meat Loaf, Utopia, Todd Rundgren along with his own music), until the Meat Loaf "Bat Out Of Hell 3" Tour begins again in October. Kasim is confirmed for 9:30PM on July 15th at "The Bitter End". Tickets will be $18 online and $20 at the door."

18.30 - A couple of amendments have been made to the Kasim Sulton's 2006 Tour page:
Tickets for The Bitter End gig on 15th July are $18 in advance and $20 on the door.
Tickets for The Saint gig on 29th July are available either on the door or can be reserved by sending an e-mail to Scott@thesaintnj.com.

Date Changed
17.00 - Kasim Sulton's Staten Island solo gig has been changed from Saturday 9th September to Saturday 16th September. The venue remains the same.
|
Two more Kasim Gigs confirmed
16.15 - Kasim Sulton's solo gig on 29th July at The Saint in Asbury Park, NJ has been confirmed. It's not listed on the venue website yet so prices and show-time will be confirmed later.
Kasim has also been booked to appear at The Cup on Staten Island on Saturday 9th September. (The day after The New Cars rearranged concert in Atlanta, GA!)
This venue is described as "Red brick walls, wood beam & original tin ceilings and oversized couches. "The Cup" is a coffee house with a laid back and comfortable feeling. At "The Cup" you can get on-line with our wireless internet, play a game of chess, read a book, or watch a movie on our big screen TV."
The Kasim Sulton's 2006 Tour page has been updated with this info.

E-mail from Kasim's mailing list
15.30 - A message was sent today from Kasim Sulton's mailing list about his forthcoming solo gigs. If you're not a member of Kasim's mailing list then the message can be viewed here. (There's also a link at the bottom of that page to join Kasim's mailing list.)
The blurb about Kasim in the mailing list message has an interesting spin on it:
"You, Kasim’s fans have been asking for this and now the time has finally come. Show your support for this talented and timeless musician!
In April of 2001, Sulton began showcasing his own music for the first time since the early 80's release of his self-titled debut album. He scheduled a few solo acoustic shows in his home state of New York. They were to be small, quiet shows just to test the waters, but word quickly spread and fans traveled from miles around to show their support. Enthusiastic fans welcomed him with open arms, and venues were soon asking when he'd be back. The overwhelming success of these early shows prompted Sulton to hit the road for a full tour that summer.
In the past few months while playing with The New Cars, Kasim has gained yet again a new following of fans. His pristine guitar playing, as well as his clear and melodic harmonies helped to make these concerts a hit with both fans and critics alike. He was showcased in the classic Cars' song, Drive and as one fan put it, "Kasim’s vocals on drive are stunning." Another review proclaimed, "Kasim filled out The New Cars sound perfectly."
Kasim will be playing shows through out the United States this summer and fall and tickets are available now."
