Couldn't I just Tell You
Review by SueW:
If it hadn't been for all the roadworks in Edinburgh I would have made this gig in plenty of time as I drove past the venue around the time that the doors opened (7.00pm) but then I struggled to find somewhere to park that was free. The first place was going to cost £9.90 (about $20) so I decided to find some on street parking but so many roads are closed or diverted as they are adding a tram system in the city.
By the time I got to Picture House, the support act (Eugene Francis Jr the same guy that opened last night) was only a couple of songs from the end of his set but he seemed to be going down well with the crowd.
This venue obviously used to be a picture house (a movie house) and still had a crest above the stage. The stage was about half as wide again as last night in Manchester. Where we entered was a bar area with stools so lots of people stayed there. They also had a balcony with seats which seemed quite full, plus there was a large area in front of the stage. I started off in about the second row on Kasim's side but then realised that I could only see his hands when he was at the keyboards (plus the speakers were right there and were very loud) so I moved back a bit after the first song.
I was correct yesterday in that I thought Kasim plays more songs on the guitar than he does keyboards and I think he plays 12 on guitar and 9 on keyboards. In two songs (Weakness is one) he plays both instruments but in both he's more on the guitar. The first six songs went down really well (especially I Saw The Light) as it was obvious that there were lots of TR fans here. Todd then told us to turn on our cell phones so that we could get a free copy of his new album. I doubt that there are many artists who have played their whole album in order on a tour. I could see all the band tonight so I noticed that it's not only Kasim that was wearing all black as they all were (although Todd had a coloured pattern on his T-shirt). Kasim was wearing a black shirt and trousers tonight. Kasim also kept his sunglass-style glasses on for almost all the set. Kasim seems to have to really concentrate on the music at these gigs which is good to see as I'm sure he's stretched more on this tour. He constantly looks down at the keyboards when he's playing them and he even looks at the strings a fair bit too (but he has to even hold his hands differently from playing bass to guitar). He still manages a nice lot of interaction with the audience though and smiled a lot which I always like to see! I'd had a chance to listen to the Arena album another couple of times today (I wished they'd released it on cassette too so I could hear it in the car!) so I'm gradually recognising the songs more now. Strike and Mountaintop are still my favourites. Strike went down really well tonight as most people in front of the stage joined in the actions and words. Todd joked about him and his crop sharer friends inviting the blues years ago and said that the hardest part was thinking of a name for the song genre. He said that they decided against animal names and opted for a colour and eventually decided on fuchsia! He then explained that things got lots in the translation so now it's known as the blues!
For the encore Rachel came on stage wearing two black wings for some reason. Also she and Todd threw things out into the audience. I'm not sure what they were but it certainly caused some people to dive for them and one guy broke his glasses near me! Both Couldn't I Just Tell You and Just One Victory were really popular tonight. For CIJTY all 4 guitarists did the scissor kicking (and Kasim does use a cord for his guitar so I hope he's careful!) At the end of the set Todd said thank you to Scotland which went down well as there's quite a nationalistic feeling up here (far more than in England). I wasn't in the mood to take photos tonight so I just snatched a couple at the end of the set. Unfortunately I'm not able to get the time off work to go to the Scandinavian concerts but it's only 8 days until I get to see the Bonn concert!
