My review of Todd Rundgren Freeze Your Ass Off Toronto by Adele Pimentel:
My friend and I were on the highway by about 6pm, and sure enough we caught traffic there was an accident and traffic had come to a halt, (there was no way I sticking around) and after a 20 minute detour we were back on the highway and on our way again. Smooth sailing....right? WRONG, there was no parking anywhere and after circling the vicinity for oh I'd say 5 TIMES (I have no patience for driving) I had to park about 4 blocks west of the Music Hall, and walk that distance in slushy snow wearing brand new leather, high healed boots!
The venue was nice, and old restored theatre, it was a seated venue which to be honest I wasn't all that excited about, after watching all the YouTube postings and reading other reviews of previous performances being in clubs, and knowing that they all surpassed expectation.....I was very apprehensive and it turned out I was right. There was a good 7 foot gap from the edge of the stage to the first row of seating, and I am sorry Toronto, but this is the third time in 12 months that I have seen Todd and Kasim or Kasim and Meat Loaf and GOD FORBID anyone stands up and enjoys themselves! Unfortunately like I said it was a seated venue, and people will stay in their seats. I am telling you the amount of energy that Todd Rundgren delivers, I found it very hard to stay seated, the music was moving and you can not help yourself from getting up, clapping, singing along and dancing around. Isn't it a good thing,?
Set list was: Buffalo Grass, I Hate My Frickin' ISP, Soul Brother, Mammon, Facist Christ, I Saw the Light, Black and White, Lunatic Fringe, #1 Lowest Common Denominator, Drive, Tiny Demons, Mystified/Broke Down, S.L.U.T., The Walls Came Down, One World, Hawking, TRAPPED, and World Wide Epiphany.
The guys occasionally looked like they were having fun, I must say Todd really showed his enjoyment. There was a lot of dialogue in between songs. He sang his heart out! and played like no other. Unfortunately I could not exactly say the same for the rest of them. Jesse... is Jessee dark glasses and his hat..an absolute master of the strings, Prairie was in fine form never missing a beat, but as much as it hurts for me to write these words, (I swear it really hurts) Kasim I don't know why ...I could count on one hand how many times he smiled and threw picks out in the crowd. He wasn't his joyful, playful self at all! His voice I must say was unbeatable, like I have always said "Angels are Jealous of his voice"! and his playing was unfaultered, but I think he must have been really, really, really tired. Also the stage was quite dark and you could hardly see them play. Kasim played with his head down alot. However, in Kasim's defence, I will say this... unbiassed as it is ;)....if anyone deserves an off day it is definitely him, even though he might have been "off" in spirits on stage, after the show off stage he was a true gentlemen! He did explain though that they had some trouble at the border with Immigration trying to enter Canada, paper work hassles I guess and that he was very tired. Even so he was gracious and appreciative as ever. He came right out, greeted us and gave me the best hug ever! I adore him for his personality and professionalism as much as I do his voice. God bless him and "May He Never Change"!
