Hawking TRConnection.com has some reviews and photos of this gig here. There is a close-up photo of Kasim by Al Cannon here. The Washington Post has a review of this gig here. The review includes the phrase "The show was more about hard-driving rock than tuneful ballads; Rundgren and the band (featuring the brilliant Jesse Gress on guitar, with Kasim Sulton on bass and Michael Urbano on drums) even tore through a cover of "Lunatic Fringe"(1981) by the one-hit wonder the Red Riders. It never sounded better."
Comments posted by fans on mailing lists and messageboards include:
"I had expected, it being a smaller venue, to have some intimacy, but it was as if Todd didn’t want to be there, and as a group they weren’t ready to be there. I understand they had just traveled down the eastern seaboard through storms, and I see they’re going right back up to CT today, but there were very few smiles, or comments that would connect with the audience."
"Saw Todd Dec. 16th at The Birchmere in Alexandria, Va. and his Guitar Playing was smoking. Could be the Best I've ever seen Him Play."
"Kasim & Jesse were teriffic as usual, and played a huge part in this fantastic rythymn section, as well."
"If you get a chance to see Kasim on this tour....Go for it!"
The venue (taken from the KasimInfo.com Blog that day):
The concert starts tonight at 7.30pm and tickets cost $35 (plus charges). Apparently The Birchmere is General Admission with all seating done on a first come, first served basis. To keep the process orderly, they use Line Numbers which are picked up at the box office upon arrival. The Music Hall is all seated with tables. At 5.00pm the Box Office opens and they start handing out Line Numbers to customers as they arrive the Box Office. At 6.00 when the Music Hall doors open, they begin seating by Line Number (i.e. the first person in at 5.00pm will be the first person in the Music Hall at 6.00pm).
Click here to view The Birchmere website and here to purchase tickets. The venue seats 500 people and Riders in the Sky recorded their live album here.
