Review by SueW:
The Rex Theater was in the same area as Club Café where Kasim has played a couple of solo gigs so we parked near there and walked (after we'd spent a while driving around the immediate vicinity of the theater trying to find somewhere to park. Before the concert started a local DJ came on stage to announce the forthcoming gigs at the venue and he remarked about how good we were by finding parking places as there was very limited parking in the area!
We knew it was a General Admission gig but what we didn’t realise was that it was virtually all seated (little fold-up chairs). If we’d have known that we would have arrived there a lot earlier. As it was we ended up sitting (on Kasim’s side of course!) in the back third of the venue.
There was a large selection of ages in the audience but most people seemed to know a lot of the songs (especially I Saw The Light). The main problem with it being a seated audience was that everybody did sit until the encore so the atmosphere wasn’t as great. There were also people constantly going out for drinks which is always rather distracting.
Kasim looked especially dashing tonight! He was wearing black trousers and jacket and a white T-shirt and was clean shaven plus his hair looked especially good - I know how shallow that sounds! He rolled his sleeves up for a lot of the concert which one member of the audience mentioned that she thought looked very good on him. Unfortunately Kasim did not seem his usual happy self on stage tonight. Right from the first song he appeared to be having problems with his ear pieces (someone said he seemed to be saying that they were buzzing) and even took them out for one song. Although he did smile a few times, he certainly didn’t make as much eye contact with the audience as he usually does and looked down at the stage floor a great deal tonight.
Kasim used two black basses but I was too far away to see if they were both KSulton Basses. Kasim’s voice sounded especially good tonight and it blends really well with Jesse’s. After seeing Kasim at some many Meat Loaf concerts this year, it’s nice to be able to hear his voice clearly.
Todd mainly used his (green) Foamy guitar but swapped to a red one a couple of times. He was wearing some tight leather-type trousers and a wonderful T-shirt with a volume knob design on it that went up to number 11! Todd seemed to play more lead guitar than he has on recent tours (IMHO) including one especially amazing long guitar solo.
Unfortunately from where we were sitting a cymbal totally obscured Michael Urbano (the drummer) so I couldn’t get any photos of him. He was obviously having some problem with the lights above his head as after the first couple of songs, he stood up and moved a couple of them! Considering we’ve been told that he had no rehearsal time with the band, just the sound check in Dallas, he played really well.
The set list was the same as at the other concerts (and in September) but it works well although I would have preferred a few more Utopia songs in it. Several of the songs were ones they played on The Power Trio Tour in 2000 (which was one of my favourite tours that Kasim has played) so it was wonderful to hear songs like Drive and Worldwide Epiphany again. (Unfortunately they play No 1 Lowest Common Denominator again on this tour and personally I really do not like that particular song!)
Todd was in fine form with his jokes and political comments. He also made it clear that he was out to insult everybody there tonight, especially with songs like Fascist Christ and S.L.U.T.!
The concert lasted almost exactly two hours and everybody around me as we left the building were all saying how much they enjoyed the show!
Roll on Buffalo tomorrow night!

"The band was smokin - this was only the fourth show of the tour, and there were a few flubs but it will only get better as the tour goes on! If you listened to drummer Mike Urbano on Rundgrenradio, he said there were no rehearsals prior to to the tour. He just learned the songs and showed up in Dallas to play."
"I also thought Kasim with his voice really boosts the backgrounds even though Michael Urbano did not sing.......and Kasim's playing this night was spot on super..he added several melodic runs/lines in Drive and Mammon as well as Fascist Christ which with Urbano was soul groove city.."
