Review by SueW:
Now I’ve got that rant off my chest(!) personally I preferred the two concerts at Manchester to this one. Afterwards I spoke to some people who preferred tonight's and other people who preferred Saturday so it seems a very subjective thing. Tonight my seat was in the third row in the block on Kasim’s side but as the arena is so large the stage wasn’t actually in front of me as the sound desk was. Thankfully everyone in my block stood through the whole set but there was definitely less people clapping and singing along tonight. However the sound in the area I was sounded very distorted which spoilt things rather.
I met a friend for a drink before the concert and then, as it was still early, I wandered around the venue and then realised that I could hear Yellow Cab being played! I dashed up the steps nearest to me hoping that Kasim was playing an opening act but unfortunately it was only a recording of the album. As there were about 13,000 people in the venue it was still good publicity (although I didn’t hear them announce what was playing). They also played Minutes Slipping Past and part of I Wanna Be Who I Am before Marion Raven came on stage and played (and said) exactly the same words as she did on Thursday night. (I didn’t watch her on Saturday night.) One thing her set does highlight is what a pleasant voice Randy Flowers has.
We had the usual All Revved Up / Paradise By The Dashboard Light opening to the set with Kasim wearing his blue and white smocktop and black trousers again. Kasim plays his light coloured (silver???) KSulton Bass in the first half of the concert and his black KSulton Bass in the second half. Before You Took The Words we again had the Kasim Sulton striptease act at the side of the stage – it’s just a shame that there isn’t a female camera operator so that we could see it on the big screen!
Before the start of Objects In The Rear View Mirror, Meat Loaf sat on the front of the stage and asked for a citizen of the city where we were to say into the microphone how the city is pronounced. The reason being that Meat Loaf (and all Americans) pronounces it "Birmingham" but in England (for some reason!) we call it "Birming’am" giving it a silent "H"!
Tonight they played In The Land Of The Pigs (The Butcher Is King) instead of The Monster Is Loose again. Personally I prefer TMIL but providing they keep Bad For Good and Blind As A Bat in that section of the concert, then I’m happy!
When Meat Loaf did the band introductions I’d began to think that he’d forgotten Kasim as he left him right to the end! He then called him over to the drum riser and told him to crouch down beside it. On other tours the riser has been all black but on this tour it was sandy coloured with a cartoon of a young boy on it and Meat Loaf told us that it was a picture of Kasim when he was young! Kasim then pointed to it and mouthed "that’s me"!
In this photo you can see Kasim saying "That's me" and pointing to the cartoon! There seems to be a nice lot of interaction between the band members on this tour. Kasim especially wanders all over the stage and tonight shared both Aspen and then CC’s microphones as well as chatting to John and Mark. He also often goes across to Paul’s side of the stage and they share quite a few moments of playing their guitars together. Unfortunately the person who decided which camera shots to use tonight missed a lot of these and even a few times opted to show Meat Loaf when he wasn’t lit up rather than Paul or Randy who were in the spotlight! It was then time for the 20 minute walk to the car and the half hour wait to get out of the £8 car park....but I'll still be back again on Wednesday!
