Review by Russel Breiter:
Jones Beach theatre can be the best place to see a show or the worst depending on the weather.

Since the theatre is right on the beach if the weather is poor you will get the full fury of natures wrath. All day the weather was nice but about ten minutes before the show the sky opened up and we had the rain and the wind and the gnats as well!!!!!

Maybe it was due to the rain but the place was half full, not unusual for this theatre although for some reason Jimmy Buffet sold out the place in a matter of hours. I think people were “All mixed up” about this show so the turnout was on the small side.

OK, I am a big Todd and Cars fan, but Blondie was just another female vocalist from the 70’s-80’s to me.

I will first stress my feeling that if any band is made up of less then 50% of the original members or if a key musician is missing then it is a tribute show and not actually the band form the old days.

Having said this I in no way feel The New Cars needed a Tune-Up but they really did not give me the feeling that I was at a Cars concert but rather it was at a rocking Hybrid step on the gas type Guitar playing version of great musicians clumped together.

I go to a concert to get entertained and I truly was- The rain was coming down really hard when the music started- OK the Blondie Leopard print hat had to go and I am glad she took it off as she reminded me of my mother-in law. . Musically Blondie was tight and even though for me it was like a trip down memory lane I was anxious for The New Cars.

It stopped raining and the stage setup for The New Cars was great as was Todd’s Quip- “What happened to the global warming- I’ts cold here!!!!”

What can I say that has not been said- really nothing other then I am not a fan of Black Maria and I thought “Set Me Free” would have been a great song for Todd to do with Kasim singing it. I loved the rencitions of the cars tunes and I Saw The light gave me the chills. It was really cool the way Todd’s voice changed when he did his own songs.

The music was really loud!!!! As always I wore my earplugs and heard fine without the ringing in my ears after the show. Babyboomers- you should all protect your hearing at these shows- take it from me - I already have a hearing loss and it is a one way street.

Comments about this gig posted on messageboards and mailing lists include:

  • The band was good and tight.
  • The highlights for me came from Greg. His solo boards on Moving In Stereo were awesome as was his sax at the end of All Mixed Up. Kasim did a great job on AMU by the way, getting that Ben staccato (Is that the right word?) down really well. But he thinned out and lost it on Drive.
  • Kasim should sing all the songs for this cover band.
  • There were about 4000 people, but the place holds 15,000. Put it this way, on the train out there, you usually know you're going to a concert, what with all of the people in their band's gear, and talking and partying. I didn't see one person on the train, who I could pick out and say, "This person's going to the show." They were all commuters on their way home.
  • Kasim nailed Drive!
  • Kazim and Prarie took some solos alone during one song.
  • Kaz did a great job with Drive.
  • Kasim is not bad he should sing all the songs.
