Sunday 13th July
Online Chat
Kasim Sulton held an online chat with his fans in the Yahoo KasimSulton2 Chatroom for about ninety minutes. About 30 fans attended. Kasim arrived 13 minutes late ("sorry guys, I forgot my password") but stayed for 83 minutes.
The points that Kasim mentioned (in order) were:
- Kasim has not yet opened at a Meat Loaf concert ("not yet - too much stuff to take care of with the new show and all") He did say that he's hoping to open this Wednesday [he's playing concerts on Tuesday and Thursday this week and Cyndi Lauper is opening next Wednesday!]
- Kasim hasn't decided yet which songs he will open with ("I'll probably play the usual suspects until I have newer material")
- Kasim started writing new songs last week ("I'm sitting here beside my in-room studio") and "I write every day"
- Kasim described Party In The Park as "Nightmare In The Park" (Kasim was planning to play a solo gig at Summerfest in Milwaukee at that time but had to cancel)
- Kasim said that the band know about "a half dozen" different versions of Anything For Love and it depends on Meat Loaf on the night about which version they sing - "it can range anything from 6 to 10 minutes"
- Kasim said that the crowd in St Louis was about 4,000
- Kasim said that he only uses Spector basses and has for the past 17 years
- Kasim "seriously doubts" that Utopia will tour again
- Kasim hopes to have some new music on KasimSulton.com "by the first week of August"
- When asked how Kasim writes a song, he said "It usually starts with a lyric, idea or chord change" ("I dream melodies")
- Kasim writes on both guitar and piano
- Kasim grew up and went to school in "Oakland Heights, Staten Island"
- Kasim said that when people asked what he does, he says that he is a singer / songwriter
- Kasim said that he has a very varied collection of CDs "some pretty obscure stuff - anything from classical to Ambient"
- Kasim's all-time favorite movie is It's A Wonderful Life and he recommends the film Run Lola Run
- Kasim said that the Meat Loaf set list doesn't vary much although Meat Loaf "threw in" You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth in St Louis
- Kasim said that The One Sure Thing was the hardest song to recreate acoustically after playing it in a band
- Kasim said that Meat Loaf used to play Original Sin on stage and he would like to play that one again
- Kasim said that during the band rehearsals they spent 4 days working on a medley of Blind Before I Stop / Rock and Roll Mercenaries and Gonna Love Her For Both Of Us but Meat Loaf decided not to use it
- Kasim believes that he will be touring with Meat Loaf until this time next year
- If Todd Rundgren wanted to put Utopia back together again, Kasim said that he would love to do it
- Kasim likes "some" hip-hop and Enimem
- "For me it's not about selling a million CDs (don't get me wrong I would love to) BUT I only want people to say that they like my music and, of course, to have a nice life."
"It satisifies a formulated niche. If Sony, Universal, TW didn't spend MILLIONS of dollars promoting Justin Timberlake do you think he'd be HALF as successful?"
"They TELL the kids what they want. You've played right into the hands of all the business suits"
"We did the National Lottery Show a few years back with Meat [in UK]. Britney was on the show that night. I went up to her because I really liked her song [Oops I Did It Again] and I told her as much but she didn't even say thanks to me. That's okay - it told me something though."
"I didn't mean to start a rant like that although on one hand the business has gotten better for people like me"
- When Kasim was asked if he liked musicals he said that he liked anything by Jerome Kerns
- Kasim had a chance to work with Ricky Martin on the Zorro movie ("he was a really nice humble guy")
- Kasim thanked us all for our support.
